given by WCDF to distinguish accomplished players. Ratings are from the new ACF Ratings by Eric Strange (2011)
and WCDF Rating No.7 (through June 2010) released 10/20/2010. "T" separates player's opponent from player's accumulated
game points.
Draw is 1, Win is 2 points, Bye is 3, and Forfeit is 4.
Mrs. Faye Harvell
Open the Texas Tournament by welcoming players to the Texas Open & District 8
with remembrance of Earl, the Tournament Memorial was a fitting tribute to
Earl Harvell. Ted Williamson held a short service memorial to Mr. Harvell, We hear some beautiful, personal remembrances, and recollections
from players who was close to Earl. Hugh Hawkins contributed his tribute
to Earl, including a presentation of plaque to Faye from the Texas
Checker Players. It was inscribed as: "Texas #1 Checker Ambassador."
There were pictures, close friends and relatives that visited the tournament.
Faye's two sons, Steve and Travis Mounger visited with us. Earl's nephew
Derrel and Tina Lokey of Wylie, TX and a good friend and neighbor Bill and
Donna Day from McKinney were there also.
Here is a scanned copy of Earl's funeral service program. During the
8:30AM
business meeting we voted to play two Divisions: a
Masters and Majors, both with 2 hour rounds. The Masters would play 7 rounds of
Round-Robin with the winners sharing the title as Co-Champions in the
event the top finisher were tied in game points since there would be no honor
points. The Majors division would play 5 rounds of Round-Robin with the
last two rounds re-paired under the Swiss System.
We elect Albert Tucker as official referee with Ed
King as assistant. Faye Harvell officiating the tournament with Carol
Williamson as Scorekeeper. Time would be adjudicated by Albert Tucker at
1 minute a move and judgment call by Tucker & or King if necessary.
1st game concluded by 11/4 hours, so the opponent with the advantaged second game has
a fair and equal time.
A number of players renewed their ACF membership when
registering to play. Larry Pollard bought two years. We enjoyed plenty of cold drinks, pastries, various
cakes and peach cobblers, through out tournament. A delicious lunch.
Beef brisket, bake beans, potato salad, macaroni salad, homemade bread,
rolls, buns, etc.
We had an abundant of choices as delicious desserts, like German Chocolate,
Pound Cake, various other cakes, pies, and breads. We had 16 players from 8 states (8 Masters, 6 Majors played) 7
Texans, and one player each from these states: AL, AR, LA, NC, OK, TN, and WV.
Nine players wives attended: Gayle Smith, Carol Williamson, Terry Gober,
Louise King, Paralee Shultz, Judy Hawkins, Sue Tucker, and of course Faye
Harvell. Door prizes of gospel music CDs and checker move recorder booklets
were given out to all players. The player who traveled the most distance, JR & Gayle Smith
1,125 miles was recognized. We appreciated the donations and
contributions which totaled $480.00 for the cash prize fund. Masters $290.00
and Majors $190.00 An entry fee of $20.00. This Super 8 continental breakfast is the usual but it did
have a waffle iron that made "Texas Shaped Waffles" which was a novelty; however,
it must have burned out since the current one makes the usual circular ones
now. A delightful tournament & wonderful fellowship was had by all
who attended.
